Hunstanton
hosted the World Water Ski Championships - 2005
On
June 11th the fastest waterski racers in the world flew into
Britain and gathered at Hunstanton, Norfolk to compete against
one another in the World Water Ski Championships. This is
the fastest form of waterskiing, demanding a high level of
physical endurance from the skiers who are towed by powerboats,
capable of speeds of 100mph in a high speed race around
a circuit lasting up to one hour. The winner is the first past
the chequered flag.

Britain
had only ever hosted this event once before in the 26
years since the first World Championships in 1979 -
and we did well!
Britain’s
Kim Lumley took the title World Water Ski Racing Champion
from the twice winner Australian, Ann Procter in the
Women's event. 23 year old Kim, a member of Hunstanton Ski Club,
from Cambridgeshire, has been training for months both here
and in Australia in preparation, and her efforts certainly paid off.
This
is the first time since the 1980's that a British competitor
has won the title.

Britain’s
Karl Brooks put also gave a fine performance and took the
silver in the Formula 1 event. Karl Brooks' team included
Robbie Wright (Driver) and Martin Brooks (Observer). It was
a great honour for Hunstanton Ski Club also as it places them
at the cutting edge of the sport.
Teams
from America, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy,
New Zealand, South Africa, Spain and Great Britain, took part
in both the Formula 1 and 2 Categories.
Great
Britain put on a tremendous event at Hunstanton with both
rough and calm water conditions. New Zealand have shown an
interest in hosting the 2007 World Championships.
